Mercedes Schlapp's position in the role of White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't an easy one. As White House's Strategist Communications Advisor Mercedes Schlapp faces a myriad of challenges. Presidents can become the director of his own communications. There are numerous legal matters which could impact messaging strategies. Cabinet Secretaries are embroiled in their respective problems. Schlapp is, however, maintained her focus on her role. She collaborates closely together with White House political affairs and the legislative team along with policy shops and the wider communications operation in order to ensure that the policies are implemented. So far, her primary focus has been on topics such as safety in schools as well as the opioid epidemic infrastructure, trade as well as other topics. Schlapp hasn't dealt with reporters often in her current position. It was in March that she received a flurry of attention, when it became known that her name would be a candidate for take over Hope Hicks's position as director of communications. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a ideal position to be a White House strategist communications advisor. The White House strategist's adviser to communications must contend various legal battles which could affect the communication strategy of the administration, and Cabinet secretaries who are involved in scandals of their own. Yet, through all of it Schlapp remains focused on the mission at hand, working closely with the White House's political affairs as well as legislative affairs and policy shops, as well with the larger communications team to coordinate policy rollouts. To date, her focus has been on topics such as school safety and the opioid crisis, infrastructure, trade, and other related topics. As of now the director does not interact much with journalists. In March, she garnered some attention after her name came up as a possible contender for the job of succeeding Hope Hicks in the role of communications director. It hasn't been a pleasant fight. Schlapp's close ally, Tony Sayegh as well as an alternative candidate, also named Tony, started jousting with each other during the media coverage. When The Washington Examiner published a negative report on Sayegh Schlapp said she called Sayegh to show a relationship with her.
